Math can be a touchy subject for many learners. Often, learners get caught up on a struggle they have with math and start to convince themselves they aren’t a math person. The truth is, we are ALL math people! We just have to find different ways to tackle the math in front of us and most important, we need a positive mindset. This may be difficult if your experience with math includes negative thoughts and memories. However, today there is a ton of resources available to help support you (or your learner) with becoming a math person.

Addition and Subtraction
When we work with computations like adding and subtracting, it becomes obvious whether or not a student has number sense. If your learner struggles to identify numbers of items smaller than 10, number sense is where you will want to begin. They need confidence in counting and identifying numbers to get the hang of addition and subtraction. Once that has been covered, some of the tips below may be helpful.
Multiplication and Division
Many math concepts build upon prior knowledge. Multiplication and division are no different. It is helpful for your mathematician to have a strong knowledge of adding and subtracting fluently before diving into these computations. Working with skills like skip counting and drawing models can also provide good background for students as they learn to multiply and divide. Check out a few more tips below.
