Summer is quickly approaching. Some people use this time to chill and regroup and I completely encourage that. However, if you’re looking to fill in some of your time with a side hustle or two, read on!
First and foremost I’d like to say that as a pro in doing the most, one of the most important things I’ve come to learn about lately are boundaries. I used to book myself up as much as possible, filling in almost all my open spots in my planner. Then one day my therapist asked me why…and I wasn’t exactly sure. Some of that is my desire to achieve and create change, which is great and all. But, some of that was me probably trying to stay busy and avoid stress and ultimately sometimes I was creating it instead. All of that to say… DON’T OVERDO IT!
Okay, so on to the hustles. I currently hold down my full time job as an instructional coach at an amazing elementary school. I also teach virtually on Outschool and facilitate Professional Development with an awesome company called Teaching Lab. Read on to learn more!
Outschool
I found Outschool after deciding that VIP— didn’t really seem to fit my needs. No shade to them at all but the hours and materials wasn’t really my cup of tea. Outschool allows you to teach classes on an endless amount of topics and you create your schedule. Currently I teach a lot of virtual tutoring and some of my student activism classes. I can definitely do an entire post on Outschool and plan to later but so far I’m a major fan.
Teaching Lab
I almost passed on this opportunity because I received a message on LinkedIn and thought it was spam 😂. It was a legitimate offer and I have been employed with Teaching Lab since January of this year. I have some great training and meetings with other facilitators. I also facilitated my first session this week! I really appreciate how TL respects (& pays me) for my time! And everyone had been so nice and abundantly helpful. No complaints so far!
Why
As I said before, I have a desire to create positive changes in education and I have been very intentional in securing roles that help me work towards that. Outschool let’s me teach my own lessons filling a need I see to inspire our future beyond academics. Teaching Lab’s entire philosophy is one I’m a fan of. You should definitely learn more about them! So that’s why in a nutshell.
How
I have 2 planners, and I still double book myself sometimes ha. I had to get into a routine of reviewing the next week or two including all things like get togethers with colleagues, OS classes, etc. I also have a weekly organizer above my desk in my office and an anchor chart filled with sticky notes of things I’m trying to keep up with. More details on organization later too!
